The other day, one of my freshmen asked me to play the song "The Climb" in our classroom while we were working on some Geometry proofs. You see, our classroom has several very nice speakers in the ceiling and, well, it would be a shame to not let music pour forth while doing math! ;-)
Maybe it was the sun shining it on a bright, cold, winter day, maybe it was the sweetness with which the student asked me, or maybe it was the quality of the sound, but the lyrics really hit me that day. Like you, I've heard the song on my car radio quite a bit, but, I guess I never really heard the lyrics this well before.
If you get a chance, listen to the song on Youtube. Make sure your speakers are on and enjoy. I think the lyrics have special meaning for my student -- and for me now too.

Earthrise
When I was a student, this photo was on the front page of every major newspaper in the world. It is the earth, appearing to "rise" like a sunrise. The view is from the moon. It was shot by astronauts on the Apollo mission. It is one of my favorite photos. It always makes me pause and reflect.

- I'm originally from greater Boston and have always called it home. I have a Bachelors Degree from Tufts U. and an MBA/CIS from Bentley College. I've also done some post graduate work in database designs at MIT. I worked for over 10 years as a systems engineer at The MITRE Corp. and then 13 years as a college instructor. I have a wonderful husband, and three great kids. I make a wonderful lasagna (or so I'm told) and my meatballs became famous in France! I have a very Irish last name (my husband's) but I am all Italian and proud of my strong heritage. I have over 60 cousins and we try to get together every year at a big, fun family reunion.
