Jing and Our Honors Geometry Projects

Dear Blog Readers,

This week my honors geometry classes have been working very hard on Cabri Jr lessons on their graphing calculators and on preliminary work for their term projects. They are going to write scripts and produce instructional videos on Cabri Jr. I am so very proud of them already! My students will probably use Jing and TI Smartview to produce the screencasts. My goals for the projects are that students learn from them on four levels:

a) how to master Cabri Jr for some important theorems and postulates
b) how to learn software tools for their 21st century skill set
c) how to learn something well enough in order to teach it clearly and cleverly
d) how to learn from each other as peer-instructors through project work AND by watching each others' videos on Cabri Jr.

Here's a question for my students to answer: What do you think will be the easiest part of your project? What do you think might be tricky for you and your group to do? Is there anything about this project that excites you? Is there anything that makes you nervous? Students, I truly want your comments!

I think the easiest part will be making the movie. I think it will be hard for us to go in order and get the steps right. I am excited about seeing everybody's finished product. I am nervous that we might do something wrong.

I think that the easiest part of the project will be finding what theorems, homework problems, and notes relate to our project. Something that might be tricky is creating the script we use to teach the subject of the project. I'm excited that we get to do a group project, but a little nervous because I'm still not very comfortable using Cabri.

I think that the hardest part of this project is figuring out what theorems to teach using cabri.jr. As far as the easiest, I think that writing the script will be farely simple, but what makes me nervous about that is making the audio in sync with the video. It is really exciting to be able to post a video project like this for everyone to see.

Hi its Alexandra from period 1.

I think the easiest part of the project will be writing the script and recording the voices. Figuring out the best way to teach everyone our topic and the easiest way will be the tricky part along with the spontaneous questions we'll have to answer from the class. I think our group will do a fantastic job at overcoming the challenges and helping each other learn. We all have different traits some are good at computers while some are fantastic at cabri jr. It's a great group.

This project excites me since I love working with computers and talking in front of people. The part that makes me uneasy is having to "become a master" at cabri jr. and learning the software.

I believe the easiest part of the project will be the writing of the script. It is easy to decide what to say but the actual acting part is the hardest. I think the trickiest part of this project will be making it funny while getting the point across while acting well. I am excited to try and make this video informational and humorous at the same time. I'm not really nervous at all.

This is Haley from period 1. I think the easiest part of the project will be figuring out how to use Cabri Jr. to prove the theorems but it will be tricky trying to figure out to teach it in a way that other people will be able understand. I'm excited about making it into a video but I'm nervous about trying to make the video good by not saying "um" and trying to film it without mistakes.

hey, this is garrison from period 1 and i think that the easiest part of the project will be proving whatever we need to on paper. I think it will be tricky to explain it and show it on the screen. i am excited about getting to work with these new programs, and am a little nervous about the project being worth 200 points.

Hi this is Connor from period 5.I think the easiest part of our project will be to explain how we get the areas of the Parallelograms and the Triangles because most kids already know how to find these and they are pretty straight forward. I think the trickiest part will be to make the actual screencast with everyone talking in it and making sure we get the points across really clear. Nothing about this project really excites me that much or makes me nervous.

I personally think that the easiest part of the project will be the work leading up to working with the software; like thinking up our ideas and writing down our plans, or even putting the script together. I think the tricky part will be using the technology, because I'm not personally familiar with it at all, so it'll be a learning experience for me and everyone else as well; to become accustomed to working with it, and learning how to evolve my ideas with my group into the format of Jing. I'm excited to work with my group on this project; it will probably be a challenge, but at least a learning experience at that. I am a bit nervous at how much work we have ahead of us on this, as I'm sure that as if the project itself wasn't hard enough, there's another side to it to learn how to use the software to make our project a success.

What do you think will be the easiest part of your project?
I think that when creating these Cabri Jr. intructional video projects the easiest part will be creating the video. Once we have the whole script written out, the video will be fun and easy to make.
What do you think might be tricky for you and your group to do?
The hardest part of this project will probably be writing the script. It is easy to leave out important steps so we have to go slowly and carefully to make sure our viewers can completely understand what we're trying to show them.
Is there anything about this project that excites you?
I think the exciting part about this project is making the actual screencast. I think it will be cool to see all the groups working out Cabri Jr. problems and it will be helpful for anyone with questions in the future.
Is there anything that makes you nervous?
The only thing that makes me nervous about this project is creating the script. Because it is easy to leave out steps, we could end up messing up the project which isn't good.

This is Emily from your period 4 class.
The easiest part of the project is probably the very beginning steps picking the topic and planning the basics out. The trickiest part for me and my group might be putting the project together with the presentation. I'm excited to learn how to use jing and other resources.

Hi, this is Sarah from period 5.
I think that the easiest part of this project for our group will be showing how to make the lines parallel and why they are parallel. One thing I think might be tricky is explaining what to do if anyone has questions, because some of the things we are doing are a little confusing to me too. Also, I think it might be a little hard to make sure everyone can hear on the screen cast. I'm excited to be able to get help from home when I might have otherwise skipped part of my homework and ask for help the next day. This way I can get it done on time and it won't cause extra work the next night. One thing I am nervous about is that someone will ask a question that none of us know the answer to or know how to explain.

I think the easiest part of the project will be the visual recording. I think that it will be tricky to think of a script that is easy to understand as a viewer and recording without pauses and ummmmmm's. I am excited to try and use the different types of technology in this project but am nervous because of the extent of the project and trying to manage my time to get this project done in a timely manner.

This is Zack from period 4. I think the easiest part of the project will be the actual filming/narration part. The tricky part will be the searching in the book and incorporating example problems in our presentation. The idea of the project seems intriguing and look forward to getting started!! Yes! Math!

Nick Guenard, period 1. I think that it will be easy to record but hard to write the script so it is interesting. I am excited to work with my group members but the actual project itself sounds extensive so i hope the outcome is good.

Hey-O! Its Carter from period 1!

I bet that the easiest part of our project will be knowing the actual theorems, and solving the problems ourselves. The tricky part is explaining it to others with a narration and visual input. I think it would be really cool for us to post our videos on TeacherTube, but knowing that they will be out there for everyone to see is a bit daunting. If we even make a few mistakes, everyone can see them.

hey this is Jason from period one. I think that the easiest part of our project is going to be putting it together as in actually recording the screen cast. I think the hardest part is going to be coming up with the script. I am excited about working with jing and playing with the jing sun. I'm nervous about how the end result will be.

I think the easiest part of the project will be writing the script. We know the math inside and out, and formulating a script out of it should be a piece of cake. I think the trick part will be getting a 100% perfect live take simultaneously speaking and manipulating the objects on the screen. To synchronize them in a timely manner while also not studdering or "umming" will be difficult. I am excited about having a longer term project because it leaves more room to really perfect your work and make sure you do a good job. Its also exciting to be getting off the paper and onto the internet! The part that makes me nervous is having technical glitches. Though this program seems relatively easy and simple to use, there is always the fear of technical difficulties that may impact the success of the project.

I believe that the easiest part of this project will be working with the cabri Jr. software that we have been using during class. Since we are working in groups, things that may trip me up as an individual might not be as hard when i can collaborate with my group. The trickiest part will probably be figuring out how to use Jing. Most people are new to the program, and it may take some getting used to. I am very excited that we are doing a hands on project, and not an individual exam, because using a project format lets us work together and learn from our mistakes. Going into this project is making me a little nervous, but once we start, I think that I will do fine.

This is Brenna from period 4. I think the easiest part will be figuring out how to incorporate Cabri Jr. into the math. I think the hardest part will be making that information understandable and easy to follow for someone who is just learning it. I'm not really nervous about this project because we have plenty of time to plan it out which won't be easy.

I think the easiet part will be identifying the hard parts of the intructions and helping the reader understand them. I think the trickiest part will be making easy to follow instructions for the steps. Nothing about this project makes me nervous, and i am excited about learning the new things that you can do on cabri jr.

This is Margaret from period 5. I think it will be easy to do the actual screencast. I also think it is easy to explain what the tricky parts are because I was confused the first time we used cabri jr too. It will be hard to write the script because there are so many little details to include. I am excited to learn more about the program and nervous because this project is so big.

This is Jill from period 5. I think the easiest part is the going to be the recording because we'll be reading from a script. But, i think that the hardest part for my group is going to be writing the script because we have to include so many steps and figure out the easiest way demonstate what we're trying to prove. I guess that this project kind of excites me and makes me a little nervous at the same time since i've never done anything like this before.

This is Leah from period 5. I think that the easiest part of the project will be when we make the video. I think this because we will already have all the hard work done and all we will have to do is read our script. The trickiest part is writing the script. You have to go through every single little step and if you leave one thing out, it's all messed up. I'm excited to post it on teacher tube or youtube but I'm nervous that it might come out bad because this project is new to me.

This is Jessica from period 4. I think the easiest part of the project will be recording. That is because we will be reading from a script and the only thing we will need to worry about is the way we talk on the video. I think the hardest part will be getting people to follow our steps. We need to make sure we include every step and make it understandable for the viewer. I am excited to do this project because I like group projects but I am a little nervous because I haven't done anything like this before.

This is Jared from period 4. I think the easiest part of the project will be creating the steps for all the transformations. I think it will be tricky to make our project into a cohesive video. I am excited to be doing a group project but I am a little nervous because it is 200pts.

Hi,
This is Alison Nagle from period 5. I think that filming will be easiest. I think that editing and writing the script will be tough and/or tricky. and i think it's exciting that we can do a project that is interesting and fun for math class. I am a little nervous about the project being worth so much of our grade.

Anonymous said...

Hi, this is Julia from Period One. I think that the easiest part of our Jing project will be writing the script. Our topic, which is transformations, is something we already covered as a unit in class, and we also went over it in relation to the Jing software. I think that the hardest part will be doing the on screen action and saying the voice at the same time. The timing will probably be tricky at first, but I know my group will figure it out in the end.

Nick Period 5

I think the easiest part of this project will be the script. It is simple to write, however tedious and time consuming. To be honest it is also very boring and I am not looking forward to it.
I think the hardest part will be the technology aspect. We will have to learn a whole new program and work through all the bugs to make a project. I am personally confused about the technology and i think we need more guidance in order to use it well.
I am frankly not excited about a math project because i foresee long hours and staying up late for a project that doesn't interest me and is not very rewarding to those who make it.
I am also a little nervous about managing time because of the various group members and activities we are involved in. I think that it will be difficult to coordinate even by doing things that you mentioned in class. There is very little time we can work on this during the week as a group and we also have a lot of other homework, so we can't all dedicate an hour a night to this. This only leaves the weekends open and people are often busy then. I would definitely like more class time to work on it or at least 10 min a few days a week to plan meeting times. I think it would be very helpful to just have these few minutes to plan our after school work time. I know that we have technology to do this but people don't always respond to emails and it is just much easier to talk in person.

This is Avery from Period 5. I think the easiest part of the project is using the Cabri Jr. software because it seems pretty simple to use. The trickiest part is making sure we include all the steps so we don't mess it up. I'm nervous because the projects worth a lot of points and we don't have much time left to work on it. And i guess i'm excited to do a different type of project than what we usually do.

This is Nicole from period 4. The easiest part of our project will be to use the actual math involved with this project. (Proving quadrilaterals are parallelograms) The tricky part will be getting together and finding time to work on the project because everyone has different activities after school. I am nervous about how it is worth around 200 points. Also how we dont have much time left to work on it and that we are having trouble finding time to work on it. It also seems like there is so much technology and other things going on in the project that it will be frustrating and very time consuming.

Hey, its Jordan from period 5.

I think the easiest part of the project will be the script writing. It is a step by step instruction. It may be easy but it is tedious. It may be tricky to use jing since our group is not farmiliar with it. Im excited to do this project because math is FUN. yay. Im nervous about finding enough time to work with my group outside of school. I thought about this over the weekend and became slightly streessed out. when im stressed i use a unique technique to relieve myself of that stress. First, i stare at the palms of my hands. I learned this in life skills with mr goodhue last year, good times. Next, i go to my hammock located in the northwest corner of my side yard. I stare at the sky and create visuals within the clouds. Many goofy ideas came to mind. It looked like a malnourished hippo was chasing a pickle. Then I suddenly wondered how far east one must go to start going west. After that, my stress had faded away. I then started a street cricket game with my fellow neighbors

Ashley Testa, Period 5

I think that the easiest part of this will be figuring out what to show during the video because we know how to use Cabri Jr and we know the topics pretty well. The hardest part, I think, will be writing the script as to make sure to include even the most basic steps so that people watching it can follow around without having a background knowledge in the calculator software. I'm not really that excited about this project because I'm probably not going to watch my video other than when I'm making it and I don't know how many people will watch a video about Cabri, but then again, I really have no idea how many people watch Cabri Jr videos. I'm not really nervous about this project and I'm kind of happy that it's worth a lot of points because you can go step by step with the project and get a good grade as long as you follow what needs to be done. It's better than a two tests where you can study for hours and you still may end up making silly mistakes and getting a low grade.

This is Joey from period 1,
I think that the easiest part of the project will be writing the script. The actual problems seem quite simple and easy to understand. I think the tricky part will be all the timing involved with the Jing video. It will be difficult to get the exact right one in the given amount of time. I am nervous about getting the work done. I am personally very busy with sports and other schoolwork and i hope that my group will get enough time together to complete the project. Overall i am excited to see all of these Jing videos.

Tomasz from period 1->

Right now I think the easiest part of the project will be just writing out the script. But as for the hard part, I think the recording will be the trickiest. Getting to use computers and our calculators is probably the most exciting part. What makes me nervous is that we might forget something or making constant mistakes while recording and then having to redo the whole thing all over again.
